This video will explain the changes and additions to the browser window in MapInfo Professional 11.5. New functions have been added, and existing functions have been enhanced, in order to improve your experience with the browser window. If you are a long time user of MapInfo Professional, the first thing you will notice about the browser window is the addition of the toolbar. It includes options that apply to the data in the Browser window. The Sort/Filter Menu button has options for sorting and filtering the browser. The Reapply button allows you to reapply any recent sort or filter options if you have made changes to the data within the browser. The Selection Menu button allows you to select all the rows or unselect all the rows. The Text Style button allows you to change the font within the browser window. The New Row button adds a new empty row to the bottom of the browser window. The Pick Fields button allows you to choose which columns of the browser to display. All of the options within this toolbar are also available from the Browse menu. The Browse menu also contains two other items. The Hide/Show Toolbar menu item will allow you to toggle the toolbar on and off. The Options menu item will allow you to toggle the gridlines in the browser window on and off. To sort a browser based on a single column, it is as simple as right-clicking in the column you wish to sort. If the column contains numeric data, you will have the option to Sort Smallest to Largest or Sort Largest to Smallest. If the column contains text data, you will have the option to Sort A to Z or Sort Z to A. We’re going to sort this browser, showing countries of the world, based on their population. The little arrow in the column heading indicates that column is sorted. You can also filter a browser at the same time. Again, right click within the column you wish to filter and choose Filter. The Filter dialog box displays which allows you to set the conditions of the filter. Click Apply when you are done and then Close to close the dialog box. We will filter our browser to show only the countries from Europe. The little funnel shape in the column heading indicates that the column is filtered. Filtering is similar to querying, but with a filter you are not selecting any rows. You are just hiding the rows that do not match the condition of your filter. Once you have sorted and/or filtered a browser you can click the Sort/Filter Menu button on the toolbar. With this menu you can toggle your sorts and filters off and on, or clear them altogether. The Reapply Sort and Filter option allows you to refresh your sort or filter if you have made any changes to the data within the browser. Before you clear the filter, you can add the filtered records as a layer to a map. Click the Sort/Filter Menu button and choose Create a Query from the Browser Contents. This will create a query that is equivalent to your filter condition. We will change the name of ours to Europe. You can open a new browser for this new query and add it to an existing map if you have one open, or create a new map window. Once you click OK, you can open Layer Control, and see that it has been added as a new layer. To clear any sorts or filters, click the Sort/Filter Menu button and choose either Clear Sort, or Clear Filters, or Clear all Sort and Filters. You can also sort on more than one column at a time. Click the Sort/Filter menu button and choose Sort Multi-Column. You can choose to sort by up to four columns. We will sort first by continent and then by country, in alphabetical order. Finally, there is a new quick way to select all the records in the browser at once. Simply click in the top-left corner of the rows and columns of data in the browser. Or you can click the Selection menu button and choose Select All.
