How To Create a Remix With Free Software [Bandlab Tutorial – Part 2]

now that I’ve arranged let’s assess I’ll be of the first chorus you may remember from the your students so let’s leave this alone for now the audio the play head to bar 37 than typing command v you how to create a remix using audio loops this is using free software that works on windows mac and Look deep inside and you’ll find the right comes out after the new year January seventh my name is Eric how this is mix major teacher Tv and I will see you next time collaborate and learn from one another next video educators and music technology teachers to group this is a great community for music come join the mix major teacher connect facebook musical creativity and if you haven’t already that you know that would like to impact kids with the video a thumbs up and share it with anybody Again as you are working on I really hope this video was helpful it was give Hi angel And so whether it is Since And tips to run and this is a broken health got We to end you can see beginner level remix to conclude this tutorial let’s take a listen to the remix from beginning So there you have it this is our finished audio gets cut out just gonna take this clip and use the handle to And to clean up this audio at the very end I’m energy is dropping out as we remove some elements bring this in slightly so that this section of and this is what creates a smooth landing course this course will hit hard and be very that with this subtraction here right before this satisfying and at the end you can see that the through the course be section now you can see and I’ll cut the high hat out about halfway also carve out audio at the end to bring the except for music low music medium and the hi hat for the last course I’m gonna remove everything energy down I’d like to give this remix a smooth landing so before course B after the quiet chorus and I’ll Next I’ll use the subtraction technique right And it’s not hats back in then halfway through the bridge bring the high energy let’s bring back the music lo loop and for the Let’s keep things simple while dropping the while clicking each clip then type command see move the play ahead and type command v and paste multiple clips you can hold shift down we can copy and paste each section and we’ll just leave the bridge empty for now if you want a copy section so that we can easily copy and paste now but first let’s split all the loops for each section we can copy and paste each sections loops into the other corresponding parts of the remix Since Now that we’re happy with the arrangement in each listen creating a more satisfying arrangement let’s will hit harder when the drums and base come in drums and music were moved here the free course stand out in this section second since all the this accomplished Things first it makes the vocal except for the acapella that’s two beats long and delete everything spaced closer together and let’s pick a section now before the course first let’s zoom in so we can see the grid lines works best right before a section where a beat and base come in I’ll use this technique right students I call it subtraction and this technique production techniques that I teach to all of my I’m gonna show you one extremely useful music We got into this I like the way this flows overall and right now and I’m gonna the same time now let’s listen to this through the end of the first course chords and the hi hat and since course be will cut everything out except for the new course have the most energy I’ll bring all Back in at the original songs arrangement to do this I’ll down a bit and create a little tension similar to the course a section I want to drop the energy medium loop and base keep the energy going up for to follow the beat even without the drums for the pri chorus I’ll keep everything as is the music the high hats so that it’s easy for the listener the verse since I wanna start the energy low I’ll cut the drums out until bar five and I’ll keep Into the second verse and additional courses for the verses free course and of course we can simply copy and paste follow the road map of the song structure and will have its own character once were happy with loops once we’re done each section of the remix refine this composition while doing this we’ll control the energy in each section by combining have our drums music base and hyatt loops in place and now we can start carving out audio to just the right amount of energy so let’s keep now we have a good starting point to work with we this hyatt loop and let’s rename the track high I like how the rhythm of this high hat fits in with the rest of the remix and I think it adds Please attention to how much energy this hyatt pattern adds you can see of the first verse and extended to the end of the the rest of the remix and I’ll be paying course now let’s assess I ask myself do I like the way this high hat pattern sounds along with timeline and let’s line it up with the beginning cherry hats zero two and drag it into the also adding energy to the remix let’s choose last loop we need is a high hat loop this hyatt this base loop renamed the track and continue the loophole and another rhythmic dimension while Let’s listen now and assess how and it definitely increases the energy will keep holy I like the way the base sounds in both sections to the end of the drag it into the timeline starting at the beginning of the pri chorus then extend the loop energy let’s find all night base zero two and it’s the free course and of course that need parts of the song that needed and in our case adds energy we should start by adding it to the adds energy to music and that’s base since base I’m gonna keep it and I’m gonna rename this track music hi the next loop will be one that always lifts the energy appropriately in the course so extending to the end of the course now that I’ve This music group sounds great and it definitely arranged I’m gonna listen and assess once again Just starting at the beginning of the chorus and zero four and drag it into the timeline this time find one more music loop that will be featured in of all the music loops let’s find all night cords music low and this will be music medium let’s once again and rename these tracks this will be whether this musical fits with the acapella and energy in the free course so let’s stay organized acapella and I like the way it increases the whether it’s energy fits within the pri course I like the way this music group sounds with the loop let’s assess once again let’s listen for end of the course now that we’ve arranged this this time starting at the recourse and let’s also extend the end of this loop to the for music medium and drag that into the time line let’s select all night court zero one alternative I like the way this music loops sounds with the acapella and I like its energy in the verse next want in this particular You can see loop to the end of the first course just like the second does this music loop had the energy that I this music loop sound good with the acapella drums listening for two things in particular first does and let’s click the little button and extend the timeline to start along with the first verse In the free courses for music low let’s select all night cords zero one and drag it into the be low and this will be featured in the verses and select music loops that fit each section so let’s we’ll call the second one music medium which will find to music loops will call the first one music courses to control the flow of energy we should pri chorus and the highest energy being in the energy in the verses with energy building in the most songs with the structure have the lowest typing drums and enter as we continue let’s think about how we want our remix to flow in general continue it’s a good idea to stay organized so I will rename this track drums by clicking here these sections so I will continue before I concede I like the way this drum loops sounds in each of has the potential to carry the remix once all the other elements of rhythm and music are added you drum loop works in each section and what I’m whether or not this listening for is not a finished product it’s just course just to get a feel for whether or not the sections of the song verses free course and let’s listen to the song and assess what we’ve and exporting Now that we’ve arranged this loop done it’s a good idea to listen in the different down into three basic steps are ranging assessing last video that music production can be broken project then let’s click the loop button on the upper right and extend this loop to go to the end up with bar marker number one the start of the I’ll move it to the left to make sure it’s lined Jerry beat to and drag it into the timeline then enough energy to carry the remix I’m gonna select main drum loops so we need to pick one with drum loop and this drum loop will be the remixes I like the way this pac sound so I’ll select k pop essentials the first step will be to select a you can preview each pack by clicking on the play button fit well with the acapella to keep things simple start by choosing a pack with sounds that you like that you think might search loops in a selected pack or click on all loops to In all packs to create a remix that sounds good right away the loops by clicking on this button on the right or using the keyboard shortcut L you can search musical training will be needed for the student let’s find some loops to work with you can find right melodies or create chord progressions no skills without needing to know how to make beats students to focus on bigger picture composition to only use premade audio loops this will allow since this is a beginner level project it’s best tutorial Let’s open this project and continue with the so that we can tell the two apart and let’s work with the top project in the rest of the tutorial and let’s go ahead and rename it this is the blank project that you can share with Click on these three dots and click copy project your students so let’s keep a copy of this back to library project untouched by clicking save then clicking this is now the exact project you can share with matches the original song and we can continue clips to the left now the acapella arrangement Song by the leading this blank section and this course a section then moving the rest of the let’s finish with and the course starts at bar marker number 37 join regions now everything looks good we have verse number two here with the audio corrected shift to select both then right click and select split click each of these sections while holding join these two sections together to remove this sections are split according to the first beat of need to split the pretty coarse clip here then each section and not the words for this reason we mentioned earlier we need to make sure our Perfect this corrects the audio but like I course drag the handle to the left and right around there it should be good let’s take a listen so in order to fix that we click on the free Split right here that the audio is not there yet the of course words actually start somewhere around here but you can see from the the audio was corrected we know from before that moved the pri course we need to make sure that the clip as opposed to moving it now that we’ve by holding down all you’ll be creating a copy of the correct spot key down while dragging and dropping the clip to can do this also even faster by holding the alt where it should go you can do this by selecting the audio typing command see on mac then moving First let’s copy the free course and place it skills to move And delete these sections matches the original and we can use basic editing blank space also after this course there is a delete if necessary before continuing so that it blank space which doesn’t match the original so it’s a good idea to rearrange these sections and be a pretty coarse right here instead it’s a different for example after verse to this should the arrangement of this acapella is slightly familiar with the original version I can see that now that has split the acapella up and I am forward different sections and you can watch this in fast so right now I’m gonna continue with this tutorial And split the rest of this aca pull up into the sections as a road map for arranging your loops this is all going to become more clear as you doing them on these bar markers on this one beats when you’re splitting these clips that you’re this is important because you’re gonna use these point is very important for you to make sure that right here at bar marker number nine at this we have to look for the nearest one beat which is the free course but we’re not going to cut their so to be clear this is where the word start for Oh my God one more time go and play it course begin which is somewhere around here let’s and I did not split it when the words of the of this will be the beginning of the pri chorus beat also known as the one beat of the pri course you’ll notice that I split the clip on the first rename this verse one so this is verse one and bars if we double click on the title here we can Then we’re gonna click on the clip and type s own ate bar clip that’s nine minus one equals 88 keyboard shortcut for split so now we can see that the first verse is sectioned off into its enable it again make it snap to the these grave markers for now let’s go ahead and forth we can see how it does not snap to one of can click the G an when we slide this back and enabled and if we want to disable snap to grid we now you can see it is snapping so snap to grid is that is we can slide the play ahead and see if it snaps to anyone of these grave markers and right first verse so in order to split the acapella sure snap to grid is enabled the way we check for here let’s zoom in a little bit and also make the beginning of the of course and the end of the okay so right at bar marker number nine this is quickly close so Tensions Into this as a Only the acapella then split the acapella accordingly legacy so let’s start off with the beginning of the first verse and identify when that verse ends to identify the different sections of the song in follow in creating the remix to do this we need the song structure in this road map is what will bridge splitting the acapella up into sections like this will help create a visual road map of include the versus free courses courses and the into its different sections these sections minute legacy This is the next step is to split the acapella up Everything will be at a hundred and 70 beats per click a just now when I ask me if I want to adjust and this time I will idea to adjust the tempo of the project to the original tempo of the song so if I type here and I type 100 and 70 beats per minute now it’s gonna major scale and at this point I think it’s a good that when we add any additional music from this point forward those loops will all fit into the we’re gonna select G major so what this means is explicitly here so we’re gonna click on that and it’s a good idea to set the key of the project the grid of the project then we can move on now So so now that we have the acapella aligned with To the snus end this is a broken that you go and you’ll want to check the Said on the stand beginning some places in the Middle and at the is now in time with the project clearly concede of the project hit play and see if the acapella and off then place the play head at the beginning next Good idea to turn the metronome on you can either click up here or type m to toggle it on because we’re only adjusting the tempo to match regions we don’t want to adjust the regions here and hit enter it’s gonna ask me if I want to adjust the audio match the acapella in this case this is a hundred and 29 beats per minute so I’m just gonna click click save next you want to set the tempo to key that the project is going to be written in as well as the relative major or minor it for the naming convention I’d like to use the open and it will open in the mix editor The next step is to rename your project then save important audio midi and select our file click the song in that folder Now let’s go back to ban lab and click on amazon song library on a mac you can go to your amazon music folder and search for the name of tempo is a hundred and 70 beats per minute so purchases and then find the acapella in your And purchase it make sure you click on download once you find original song is in G major and the original a site like tune bat dot com you can see that the up temple pop if you ever want to find out the original tempo and Ki of a song you can do it on with the intention of making it easier for re mixers to produce in genre is like ed m House or creators of this acapella did this most likely a hundred and seven beats per minute tempo the acapella is much faster than the original If you’re familiar with the original version of the song you’ll notice that the tempo of this listen to this version by clicking here through high school will know this song I can students from elementary Middle and all the way the Middle which was a big pop hit this year many came out in two thousand eighteen and I’ll choose an acapella that’s good enough I’ll go to this album which contains covers of hit songs that the downside in using these versions if you find original form but I believe the upside outweighs since they are used to hearing the song and it’s with You may get some pushback from your students should find some that are good enough to work much as the original and in fact you can pretty much guarantee that but if you search around you versions you probably won’t like them nearly as find that as you listen to these uh capella results is a good idea to sort by album you’ll like a lot of these songs here and once you see the acapella that seem to be made for re mixing beats per minute which I found to be tagged to reason for using the keyword hits dp m stands for capella of popular songs Students already know and like and that’s the results that just don’t fit the idea is to find a if you simply enter a capella you’ll see a lot of hits and be pm the keywords hits mvp and will help narrow your search to what’s more relevant acapella digital music and then type in the key words amazon you can go to amazon dot com click on down if the record label decides that they don’t want you to keep it up to find a capella is on If you publish it on youtube facebook instagram or soundcloud just be ready for that to get taken if you do happen to get an acapella and make in your classrooms so just a word about copyright song sung by someone other than the original artist you can purchase and download these legally and you can use them in your music production and popular songs and these versions you hear the what you will see our acapella cover versions of Most record labels don’t release acapella capella versions on stores like itunes or amazon almost no options to purchase or download a versions for public consumption so you’ll see to download them without breaking copyright laws studio quality acapellas of popular songs are actually very difficult to find if you’re going and find one where do we find acapellas? well an acapella so let’s leave Bandlab right here you’ve chosen for your remix so we need to find the first track should be whatever a capella personal project this will lead you to Bandlab’s DAW interface called the mix editor you’ll see options here for creating your first track and dot com and create an account And once you’ve done that click on create and click on start so if you haven’t already go to edu dot band lab training and requires no music production experience you’ll learn on Bandlab for Education students this process requires no musical the same process I use with my beginner level following first you’ll set up a blank remix project containing only an acapella you can use this project with your students then you’ll learn tutorial in this tutorial will accomplish the We’ve got remixes covered let’s get into the way and motivated regardless of their level of musical training so small approach will keep kids engaged the entire engaged in the learning process so this big to already know and like they are going to be exactly what to do with them since they will have benefit if kids are re mixing songs that they practice already in composition and as an added Energy mood and flow they’ll eventually and by the time they get to that point they’ll know own core progressions and making their own beats progress to writing their own melodies their loops and percussion loops to create and control learn first how to combine beat loops with chord level composition skills that students should mood and flow in my opinion it’s these bigger level compositions skills and controlling energy at the same time you end up practicing bigger structure as a road map for your own production. structure to work within and you can use the learn music production especially early on in the process why because the original song gives you how to make today. Remixing is a great way to same but the beats and the music have changed this is the type of remix that you’ll be learning The acapella of the original song will stay the different version of a song that’s already been made in many cases you’re ready to get started let’s go first let’s and you’ll get more out of this tutorial so if talk about remixes. 1. Hey man, I'm noticing as I prepare to begin this project with my students, that the loops are not adjusting to the explicitly stated key. Any advice?

  2. so recently Gopnik McBlyat has released a sound pack filled with notes… is there anyway to use them in cakewalk? I know the simple trick with Ableton would be to simply drop the audio clip in a midi track but it doesn't seem to work with Cakewalk. Any help?
(no I don't have Ableton anymore)

  3. Hi I can't really get my acapella to match with the metronome no matter how hard i try… even on the bpm that the song is on, the metronome is always off beat.
